What is the point of the format suffix when setting up swagger-node-express

So I've always thought that the suffix feature would allow you to document different formats available for your resources, like json, xml and others. But now really looking at it, this isn't really possible.

Is there a way for me to use the configureSwaggerPaths function to actually set that up? If not, what's the point of this function really? The documentation doesn't really provide much help here, it only shows you how to use it if you want to get rid of the {format} portion of your paths, but nothing else.
